I have never been the type of person anyone would consider describing as a social butterfly. When I am around friends I know and love I am the life and soul of the party. But it takes me an awfully long time to feel comfortable enough to really be myself with anyone. So typically when I find myself in the midst of large gatherings or amongst relative strangers I tend to clam up and it takes a real effort of will to start a conversation with someone. That is always assuming I have actually plucked up the courage to attend the event and didn't back out at the last minute in a nervous panic.
I have also never been a girlie girl. I was always a tomboy. I never liked dolls, dressing up or any of the typical girlie activities. Instead I could be found over at the local building site making cement pies. Which one time proved disastrous as I and two friends managed to set ourselves in the middle of a very large cement pie. My father found us several hours later and had to prize us out of our wellies. After which we were escorted home for a good dressing down, not least because he and my mother had been so worried when I did not turn up for lunch that day and because it meant that they had to buy me new wellies. (I wonder what the builders thought when they arrived the following Monday morning to find three sets of wellington boots, child size, stuck in a cement mound??)
I spent twenty two years working in the very male dominated industries of first petroleum production and then communications cable manufacturing and distribution. I have several very close female friends but for the majority of the time spent my waking hours and days socializing with men. I might add that cable guys don't tend to ever exhibit a "feminine side".
So when I became a Mom I faced some interesting and unexpected new challenges. It quickly became clear to me that unless I wanted to completely socially isolate myself and my new daughter from the world I was going to have to be brave. I was going to have to find ways to meet and get to know other new Moms. So I did it, I joined classes and started going to story time at the library, making the effort to talk to other Moms about the usual things Moms talk about i.e. their new offspring. Until one day talking to two of the Moms at the library one of them suggested we form a play group.
So the day of the first play date dawned. I admit I was nervous. Well OK then I was terrified. What was going to happen? What were the social rules and obligations for such an event? I read the parenting books but all they talked about were the dynamics associated with the children such as the ideal number of children to include, how long the play date should last for etc etc. But all I could do was think what about me? What am I supposed to do? What do women talk about at such events I wondered?
If you think about it play dates are a very fascinating form of social dynamic. When you work you often have to deal with and try to get along with people. But you are getting paid to do it. Whereas a play date is a social event at which all too often new Moms willingly come together for the simple fact that they have one thing in common - a child the same age as yours. Some people wind up living near friends they have known for a long time who happen to have children at the same time too. But very often in our modern world, where people relocate to find work and for a whole host of other reasons, a lot of Moms find themselves in the position I did. At home, alone and desperate for some company in the form of a non-drooling human being who can do more than just drink milk, sleep, fill diapers, drool and burble at you!
I have decided to do a little mini-series on play dates. For the rest of this month I will be doing a post each Tuesday on play dates and some of my more "interesting" experiences.
